How TAPOUT SESSIONS Work: Understanding the Process Before You Book

ree

At Artisticbloodline, we offer a unique tattooing experience known as a Tapout Session. This session style is designed with endurance in mind—both physical and mental. Unlike traditional hourly tattoo appointments, Tapout Sessions are not based strictly on time. They are based on your personal pain tolerance. If you’ve ever wondered how these sessions work and what to expect, this blog post will walk you through everything you need to know before booking one.

What Is a Tapout Session?

A Tapout Session is an extended tattoo session where you can get as much ink as possible in one sitting—but with one catch: you decide when it ends. The session only continues as long as you can physically and mentally endure the pain.

The phrase “Tapout” comes from the moment when the client reaches their limit and can no longer continue the session. That moment officially ends the session—regardless of whether the tattoo is finished or not.

The idea is simple:

  • You book a session (for example, a 4-hour Tapout Session).

  • We tattoo for as long as you can endure.

  • If you tap out (meaning you can’t continue because of the pain), the session ends.

Tapout Sessions Are NOT Based Solely on Time

Many clients assume that when they book a Tapout Session, they are guaranteed to get a certain amount of time under the needle. While the session has a time limit (e.g., 4 hours), the clock is only your friend if you can endure that long. If you tap out after 2 hours, your session ends at that 2-hour mark—even though you booked for four.

This is a pain-tolerance-based session—not a guaranteed-time-based one. It’s important to come mentally and physically prepared, well-rested, hydrated, and ready to sit for as long as you can. The longer you can go, the more work we can complete in one sitting.

What Happens If You Tap Out and the Tattoo Isn't Finished?

If you tap out before the tattoo is finished (which is very common during these intense sessions), don’t worry—you can book a rebooking session to complete the tattoo. However, it’s important to understand how rebooking works:

Your rebooking session is an exact duplicate of the session you originally tapped out on.

So, if you booked a 4-hour Tapout Session and tapped out at 2.5 hours, your rebooking will also be a 4-hour Tapout Session. The pricing and structure remain the same.

This ensures that you have enough time (and tolerance) to finish the work or at least make significant progress toward completing your piece. It also helps us schedule the appropriate amount of time for your artist to work uninterrupted and give your tattoo the attention it deserves.

Want Help With the Pain? Add the Numbing Cream Service

We get it—tattoos can be painful. For clients who want to extend their session or improve their comfort during the process, numbing cream is an optional service you can add to your booking. But it’s very important to follow the correct steps to include it in your appointment:

Here’s how to properly add the Numbing Cream Service:

  1. Add your Tapout Session to your cart.

  2. Before you check out, click “Continue Shopping.”

  3. Find and add the “NUMBING CREAM SERVICE” to your cart.

  4. Now go back to your cart and check out with both services.

  5. Apply your discount code (if you have one) before finalizing your checkout.

Important Note: Numbing cream takes 1 to 3 hours to reach maximum effectiveness. If you choose to use it, please apply it 1 to 3 hours BEFORE your appointment or be patient upon arrival while it kicks in.

This means if your session is scheduled for 2 PM, it’s best to apply the cream between 11 AM and 1 PM. If you want us to apply it in-house, you must arrive early and be willing to wait until the numbness reaches its peak before the tattooing begins.

Tips to Maximize Your Tapout Session

Whether you’re a first-time client or a tattoo veteran, here are some tips to help you get the most out of your Tapout Session:

  • Get a good night's rest before your session. Fatigue increases your pain sensitivity.

  • Eat a full meal before you arrive. Low blood sugar = less pain tolerance.

  • Stay hydrated. Dehydration can make your skin more sensitive and dry.

  • Dress comfortably and wear clothing that gives easy access to the tattoo area.

  • Mentally prepare—bring music, earbuds, or something to help distract yourself.

  • Use numbing cream if you're nervous about the pain, but follow the application instructions carefully.

Is a Tapout Session Right for You?

Tapout Sessions are perfect for clients who:

  • Want to complete large pieces in fewer appointments

  • Have a decent to high pain tolerance

  • Are mentally prepared to sit for extended periods

  • Are open to using numbing cream to extend their time

They’re not ideal for:

  • First-time tattoo clients who aren’t sure how they’ll handle the pain

  • People with very low pain tolerance or anxiety about needles

  • Clients who assume the session guarantees a full block of time regardless of endurance

Final Thoughts: Know Your Limits—And Respect Them

Getting a tattoo is a form of body art and a test of endurance. At Artisticbloodline, we respect every client’s limits and aim to provide a safe, respectful, and creative environment to help bring your vision to life. Tapout Sessions are a powerful way to make big progress on your tattoo journey—but they’re only as effective as your body allows them to be.

Whether you’re booking your first Tapout Session or returning for a rebooking to finish a piece, understanding the rules and structure helps ensure a smoother experience for everyone involved.
